The 'First Peoples of the Tongass' centennial celebration event held on Sunday, August 18, 2002, honored the original residents of the Tongass. A public gathering at City Park led off from 9:00 am -11:00 a.m.

From noon until evening, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian & guests then went to the Civic Center for dancing, traditional foods and speeches by Native leaders.

Tongass Tribe and Cape Fox dancers were the host dance groups.

12:00: A Pot luck of traditional Native foods. A USFS historical presentation was given by John Autrey and the response to the USFS presentation was by Kenneth Yates of Craig, the successor to the Clan Chief Double fin Killer Whale.
