The 'First Peoples of the Tongass' centennial celebration event held on Sunday, August 18, 2002, honored the original residents of the Tongass. A public gathering at City Park led off from 9:00 am -11:00 a.m.

From noon until evening, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian & guests then went to the Civic Center for dancing, traditional foods and speeches by Native leaders.

Tongass Tribe and Cape Fox dancers were the host dance groups.

1:30 pm: Grand entrance of dance groups. Richard Shields was Master of Ceremonies for the dance groups. The dance groups performed in geographic sequence. Merle Hawkins.- a KIC Tribal council member and a U.S. Forest Service employee. Ms. Hawkins volunteered to work in the kitchen and later spoke as one of the dinner speakers representing KIC.
