Ketchikan: Saturday morning, May 17th, 20 members of the Ketchikan Fire Department's Firefighter-1 class held a flag-raising ceremony at fire station #2 located at 3352 Tongass Ave. The ceremony was highlighted by a "bagpipe salute" by Ken MacCrae of Ketchikan.

Following the flag-raising ceremony five teams, each composed of four men, completed two different drills of firefighting. The drills included ladders training and forcible entry through doors, windows and walls.

These firefighters have been attending class Monday through Friday from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm and every Saturday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm for the past three weeks. Classes will come to a conclusion on June 8th when all 20 firefighters will complete the State of Alaska's Firefighter-1 certification test.

Of the 20 firefighters involved in the training, seventeen are with the Ketchikan Fire Department, two are members of the South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department and one candidate is from the City of Klawock.
