The Rainy Day quilters Guild Community Service Committee sponsored a premeeting sewing bee in late September to make pillowcases for WISH. In a busy hour and a half, approximately 35 quilters, sewing machines humming, cut out and sewed over 60 pillowcases for the committee's monthly donation to WISH. The pillowcases, which will be given to WISH clients and their children, were made of fabrics ranging from baby and children's prints to decorator fabrics for adults, all made and donated by members of the Rainy Day quilters Guild. This month is of particular significance for WISH, since it is National Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.

Cathy Tillotson, Chairperson of the Community Service Committee, said that last month's donation to WISH was school supplies, and in October, medicine cabinet essentials will be the focus of the donations. Earlier this year members started working on bibs for residents of the Pioneer Home.

Last year, Angie Tillson chaired the Community Service Committee and donations of Baby quilts for newborns were made to Ketchikan General Hospital, as well as, quilts for the Department of Youth and Family Services to distribute to their clients.

Each year the Guild donates quilts to the First City Cancer Auction. Last year a quilt was also donated to Alaska Women in Timber at the Alaska Forest Association convention. All of the proceeds from these donations benefit the receiving organization.

Additionally, the guild sponsors a yearly quilt Show during Festival of the North and participates in the Blueberry Festival, as well. Beautiful raffle quilts are offered to the public at each event. In 2002, the quilt Show was visited by 700 people and had approximately 400 quilts on display.

The purpose of the Rainy Day Quilters Guild is to promote cooperation and exchange of ideas among quilters, to instruct members in methods and techniques, to inspire personal achievement, and to encourage and maintain high standards of design and technique in quiltmaking. The Guild is a non-profit organization and has flourished for over 20 years. This year there are approximately 90 members in the guild, and new members are always welcome. This year's co-Presidents are Mary Jo Erickson and Dena Conley. The Guild generally meets at Holy Name Church on the 4th Tuesday of every month, with some variation depending on major holidays. There are also subgroups meeting throughout the month, devoted to particular quilting interests, such as Miniatures, Applique, Paper Piecing and Friday Freeloaders.

Information about how to become a member is available at The Silver Thimble.
