National Energy Bill Conference 'On Life Support'

Anchorage - Frank Murkowski announced on Tuesday that he would return to Washington to advocate for a number of Alaskan interests in the national Energy Bill, which is now approaching a critical stage in the legislative process.

"There are still many critical battles left - including opening ANWR and passing a package of measures to assist in the development of the gas line," Murkowski said. "Clearly, moving our natural gas to market is an important part of Alaska's future. Any energy bill must address the 'regulatory' risks through expedited permitting procedures and streamlined judicial review - as well as the financial risk - by providing sufficient government support to advance the project.

Murkowski said, "The greatest challenge on ANWR is overcoming intense Democrat opposition. Through misinformation, Democrats have distorted ANWR beyond reality. As we face war and global uncertainty, we shouldn't put personal gain ahead of this country's energy security - but too many already have."

"This is a critical time in the energy debate. On Wednesday, President Bush signs into law the Iraq resolution. With it in place, we must do all that we can to further secure our homeland - passing a comprehensive bill is where we should start," said Murkowski.

"It is not clear whether politics will triumph over policy and whether the conferees are willing to sign off on a comprehensive energy bill. In my view, the conference is on life support. However, I will try my best to breathe life into it and try to convince my colleagues of the critical importance of a comprehensive national energy plan for this country," Murkowski said.
