While it's doubtful no one has ever stumbled across an ancient chest overflowing with gold coins or jewels, the waters and beaches of Southeast Alaska have yielded innumerable treasures to those who have gone in search of them. There's a special story behind these people and their finds, which will be revealed by a personal statement that accompanies each piece. Like beach digger Karla Sunderland, who has an impressive collection of bisque "penny dolls," unearthed at the old City Dump site at Todd's Beach. Or diver Wayne Lich, whose extensive collection of steamship china is a result of thorough research and what he calls "trial and error" diving. Individually and collectively, the items featured are reminders of our community's history - domestic, industrial, commercial, and maritime - as well as our place in the world. Most of all, they evoke the imagination and our sense of wonder and curiosity about these objects, and how they came to be found on or near our shores. The opening reception will
be 5 - 7 p.m. at the Tongass Historical Museum. View the newest
exhibit while enjoying some wonderful refreshments!
