Wdnesday's announcement included direct financial assistance to individual fishermen, and an economic development matching grants program that encourages projects that help the salmon industry in the long term. "This aid for salmon fisherman is designed to spur increased productivity and innovation in Alaska's fishing industry," said Murkowski. "Changes in commercial fishing have caused severe economic hardships on families that rely on fishing to pay their bills and sustain their families. For those who qualify, the state is providing an opportunity for those with urgent financial needs to apply for economic assistance. This aid represents our commitment to our hard working fishing families, and to the future of commercial fishing in Alaska." According to information provided by the Office of the Governor, currently more than 15,000 applications have been sent to permit/license holders in Alaska. There is a total $5 million in individual aid available, and those applying must have held an active 2002 commercial salmon permit or crew license. Applications for assistance are available at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and must also include copies of individual tax returns. The deadline to apply for aid is June 7, 2003, and Murkowski noted that he hoped to have checks mailed out by the end of June. The Fisheries Economic Development Matching Grant Program is intended to assist communities in fishing regions impacted by a downturn in the salmon fishing industry. Approximately $13 million in aid is available, and grant applicants must submit a project that will help the salmon industry in the long run. Projects should increase Alaska seafood quality or diversity, increase value for consumer products, increase processor harvesting and profitability, lower costs within industry, and or increase economic activity within communities. The matching grants will be available to communities, municipalities, tribal councils, non-profits, small businesses, fishermen, fish processors, etc., and applications are available at Department of Community & Economic Development. The deadline for applying is June 2, 2003.
