Ketchikan General Hospital OB/Maternity Unit recently sponsored a contest to re-name the Department. The result was the new name: New Beginnings Birthing Center.

Eighty-eight entries were received, and OB nurses and KGH employees identified three top choices. On Saturday, May 10th, the hospital sponsored a Baby Fair, and the visitors to the fair voted from among the top three choices. Four different contest participants suggested the name New Beginnings Birthing Center.

The New Beginnings Birthing Center offers a family based, non-interventional style, with four fully equipped rooms for labor, delivery, newborn and recovery care, and two additional rooms for post-surgical moms and infants. With the recent addition of a hospital-based midwifery option, and a second Obstetrician/Gynecologist, the unit offers a full range of care to the people of southern Southeast Alaska.

Donna Smith, MD, Robert Burnett, MD, and Marta Poore, Certified Nurse Midwife, make up the medical team along with ten full time and four part time registered nurses specially trained in OB and neonatal care.
