Governor Appoints 51 Alaskans to Boards and Commissions

Juneau - Governor Frank Murkowski today announced the appointment of fifty-one Alaskans to statewide boards and commissions. "The call to serve has been answered by these fine Alaskans, and I salute their willingness to give back to Alaska. Responsible government requires the active involvement of its citizens," said Murkowski.

Alaska Commercial Fishing and Agriculture Bank Board of Directors

Bob Scott of Kenai is currently the president of Salamatof Seafoods Inc. and has worked to open new markets for fish in Europe and the Far East. He has worked in the seafood processing industry in Alaska for over fifty years.

Alaska Children's Trust Board

Margo McCabe of Anchorage is currently a principal member of McCabe Consulting and had previously worked for Marriott International. McCabe has been a longtime advocate for children and has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), representing the

best interests of children in Child in Need of Aid cases since 2002. She is also involved in various Anchorage area charities that assist children.

Kaye Saxon of Wasilla currently works for the Alaska Department of Corrections at the Mat-Su Pretrial facility as an education coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and has received domestic violence training, victim impact training, and participated in a children of incarcerated parents summit.

Board of Dental Examiners

Kevin Gottlieb of Anchorage will be serving in the designated dentist seat. He currently works for the Southcentral Foundation in Anchorage. He graduated from Georgetown University with a D.D.S. and was a member of the Dental Honor Society. He is a member of the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Executive Clemency Advisory Committee

Lt. Gov. Loren Leman, executive branch member.

Alaska State Emergency Response Commission

Tom Vaden of Nome currently works for the Norton Sound Health Corporation as a health aide trainer and village supervisor instructor. Vaden is a certified teacher, First Aid instructor, Emergency Medical Technician level III, and an experienced aeromedivac.

Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education

Arthur Walters of Seward currently chairs the council. Walters has been recognized for his work with disabled people. He has received the Department of Health and Social Services Recognition Award from 1994 until 2000, and an award from the state for his dedication to efforts to improve the lives of disabled people in the state.

Jodi Rumph of Juneau is currently the Juneau chairperson of the Key campaign and is a board member of Parents, Inc. which is active in the special education system in Alaska.

Statewide Independent Living Council

Erma Perry of Palmer currently works for the Wasilla Public Health Center as a public health nurse aide. She attended Texas Southern University and Houston-Tillotson College while studying sociology. She is a member of the Mat-Su AARP, and the Denali Business and Professional Women.

Commission on Judicial Conduct

Richard Burton of Juneau is currently a public safety consultant. He was previously Alaska's commissioner of Public Safety from 1991 until 1995, and served as Juneau's chief of police in 1973 and 1974. In the early 1990s Burton led a delegation of public safety officials to Russia to provide and information exchange on criminal activity between Russia and Alaska.

Local Boundary Commission

Georgianna Zimmerle of Ketchikan was appointed to the Local Boundary Commission. She formally served as the borough manager for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough.

Alaska Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee

Vicki Blankenship of Fairbanks was re-appointed to a public seat. Blankenship was first appointed in 1991 and has been an active member ever since. She currently provides contract services for a nonprofit agency in Fairbanks and specializes in emotionally impaired youth and families, and has worked in this field since 1986.

Seth Church of Fairbanks was appointed to an under-24 seat. Church is currently a page with the Alaska State Senate and has volunteered and been active in many organizations. Church lived for several years in the Philippines volunteering in various building and social projects and was chosen to be a member of the Fairbanks Youth Forum, which helps encourage young people to get involved with local government.

Board of Nursing

Catherine Giessel of Anchorage was appointed to a registered nurse seat. Giessel received a bachelor's of nursing from the University of Michigan and a Master's of Science in Nursing from the University of Alaska. She currently works as a family nurse practitioner at the Alaska Alternative Medicine Clinic, the Alaska Native Medical Center, and First Care.

Sally Harvey of Norvick was appointed to a public seat. Harvey has five years of experience as a voluntary health aide and 36 years as a Community Health Practitioner with Maniilaq Association. She is retired.

James Jurrens of Juneau was appointed to a registered nurse seat. Jurrens has been licensed as a registered nurse since 1985 and currently works for Bartlett Regional Hospital as the manager of surgical services. He had previously worked at the Dartmouth Medical Center and the L.E. Cox Medical Center.

Cathleen Ringstad Winfree of Fairbanks was appointed to a registered nurse seat. Winfree has been licensed as a registered nurse since 1978 and received her nursing degree from the University of Oregon. Currently she is a member of the part-time faculty at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and was previously a staff nurse at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for seven years.

Mary Weymiller, L.P.N. of Fairbanks was re-appointed to a licensed practical nurse seat. Weymiller currently works as an LPN for the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic in Fairbanks and received her nursing degree from Boise State University in Idaho.

Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority Board of Trustees

Nelson Page of Anchorage was re-appointed to a public seat. Page is a shareholder at the law firm of Burr, Please, and Kurtz in Anchorage. He has been a member of the Mental Health Trust Board since 1996, and served as the founding chair from 1996 until 1999. He received his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.

Board of Pharmacy

Mike Pauley of Anchorage was appointed to a public seat. He currently works for the Matanuska Electric Association and is a manager of corporate communications. He received a degree in international politics from Georgetown University.

William R. Altland of Craig was appointed to the pharmacist seat. Altland is the co-owner and pharmacist of Whale Tail Pharmacy in Craig. He had previously been the pharmacist in charge at the SEARHC Native Clinic in Klawock, and was also the director of the Pharmacy Department at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti. Altland attended the UAMS College of Pharmacy.

Alaska Workforce Compensation Board

John Abshire of Wasilla was re-appointed to the at-large/labor seat. Abshire is a former Alaska Department of Labor Deputy Commissioner, and had previously worked as a member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers Local 751 in Anchorage. Abshire attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage and the National Judicial College University of Nevada.

Richard Behrends of Juneau was re-appointed to the 1st Judicial District/industry seat. Behrends graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in environmental policy and administration. He is currently president of Behrends Mechanical, Inc., and had previously worked for Jack's Plumbing and Heating. Behrends has also been a trustee for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Pension Trustee since 1995.

Marc Dana Stemp of Bethel was appointed to an at large/industry seat. Stemp is currently president and CEO of the Bethel Native Corporation and was formally the chief financial officer of Ahtna, Inc. He is a former member of the Alaska Workers Compensation Board.

Andrew J. "Bear" Piekarski of Eagle River was re-appointed to the 3rd judicial district seat. Piekarski attended Saint Cloud State College and has worked as president of the Laborers Local 341 since 1967. He also owns the King Bear Lodge.

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation

Frank Roppel of Wrangell was appointed to a seat designated for someone with expertise in senior or low-income housing. Roppel was a previous member of the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation and the Alaska State Housing Authority. Roppel is currently retired but had worked for the Alaska Pulp Corporation and Sealaska Timber Corporation.

Jan K. Sieberts of Anchorage was appointed to an energy efficient home-building or weatherization seat. Sieberts has spent a majority of his career since 1975 as the senior officer of National Bank of Alaska in real estate development. He has also been directly involved with issues and groups that focus on weatherization and energy efficiency.

Labor Relations Agency

Colleen E. Scanlon of Ketchikan was appointed to a management/manager seat. Scanlon currently works for Scanlon, Inc., and had previously worked for the Ketchikan Economic Development Authority. She currently serves on the Ketchikan Visitor's Bureau Board of Directors.

Alaska Bar Association
William A. Granger of Anchorage was re-appointed to a public seat. Granger is also a board member for the Anchorage Center for Families and National Bank of Alaska. He is a past president of the Alaska chapter of Make-A-Wish Foundation and attended Gonzaga University.

Barbers and Hairdressers

Charlette Lushin of Fairbanks was appointed to a barber seat. Lushin received her barber license in 1981 and has worked as a barber for over twenty-four years, and has been self-employed for the past twenty-one years.

Joylene A. Marrs of Anchorage was appointed to a public seat. Marrs has a bachelor's degree in public relations and journalism from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She had previously worked for Alaska television stations KIMO 13 and KTVA 11.

Chiropractic Examiners

David Mulholland, D.C. of Anchorage was appointed to a chiropractor seat. Mulholland graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic and is a member of the America Chiropractic Association and the International Chiropractic Association.

Medical Board

Robert Breffeilh, M.D., of Juneau was appointed to a physician seat. Breffeilh is currently on the Bartlett Regional Hospital Board of Trustees and is a practicing physician in Juneau and other Southeast Alaska communities in partnership with the Tongass Regional Eye Clinic. He attended medical school at the Louisiana State Medical Center.

Professional Teaching Practices

Cynthia Dolmas Curran of Juneau was re-appointed as the Education Department representative. Curran holds a Masters of Science in education from Western Oregon University and is currently an administrator for teacher education and certification for the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.

Mark Doner of Palmer was appointed to a classroom teacher seat. Doner has taught in the Mat-Su valley since 1989, teaching at Wasilla High School, and Colony High School. He received a Master of Art in teaching with a secondary math certification from the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

Thomas Keefe Lamal of Fairbanks was appointed to a classroom teacher seat. Lamal has taught for the Fairbanks Northstar Borough School District for 13 years and received a bachelor's degree in history and english from Regis College in Denver, Colorado.

Psychologist/Psychological Examiners Board

Lorin L. Bradbury, Ph.D. of Bethel was appointed to a psychologist seat. Bradbury received a Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology from the University of Mississippi and a Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Bradbury currently works for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation as a clinical psychologist.

John A. Miller, Ph.D. of Chugiak was appointed to a psychologist seat. Miller currently is a staff clinical psychologist at the Providence Behavioral Medicine Group-North in Wasilla and is the president and owner of Take Flight, a pilot training center in Anchorage.

Real Estate Commission

Bradley J. Fluetsch of Juneau was appointed to a public seat. Fluetsch was most recently the chief executive officer/ chief investment officer of Raven Asset Management, LLC, and was an investment officer with the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation from 1995 until 1999. He received his business administration degree from Washington State University and is a director of the Juneau Economic Development Council. Fluetsch is a certified financial analyst.

Barbara Parker Ramsey of Anchorage was appointed to an associate broker seat. Ramsey has held a real estate license since 1984 and has been an associate broker since 1987. She is also a current member of the Anchorage Board of Realtors Professional Standards Committee. She currently works with Dynamic Properties in Anchorage.

David Somers of Fairbanks was appointed to a broker-at-large seat. Somers is the current national director of the National Association of Realtors, and the director of the Alaska Association of Realtors. He was realtor of the year in 1995 for the Alaska Association of Realtors and the Greater Fairbanks Board of Realtors.

Z. Kent Sullivan of Juneau was appointed to a public seat. Sullivan graduated with a law degree from the University of Montana and is employed at Baxter Bruce and Sullivan P.C. in Juneau.

University of Alaska Board of Regents

David Parks of Palmer was appointed as the student representative to the Board of Regents. Parks is a junior majoring in political ccience at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and was elected vice president of the student body his freshman year and president his sophomore year. He is also involved with the Campus Recycling Program, Campus Crusade, and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

Veterinary Examiners

Steven Torrance, D.V.M. of Fairbanks was appointed to a veterinarian seat. Torrance has practiced small animal medicine and surgery at three small animal veterinary hospitals since June of 1995. He is experienced in diagnostics and internal medicine as well as general and orthopedic surgery, and is a past president of the Interior Veterinary Medical Association.

Libraries Advisory

Terrill A. Sullivan of Anchorage has been appointed to a library user seat. Sullivan has been certified as a teacher since 1995 and attended Eastern Washington University receiving an education degree. Sullivan currently works for the Anchorage School District and was a full-time classroom teacher from 1997-2001.

Postsecondary Education Board

Joshua Kugler of Fairbanks was appointed to the student representative seat. Kugler is currently a junior at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and graduated from the University of Nebraska Independent Study High School.

Community Service Commission

Dawn E. Grossman of Delta Junction has been appointed to a public seat. Grossman has been a Deltana Fair volunteer for the past ten years, a Red Cross volunteer for eight years, a Fort Greely Community Service Volunteer for five years and has volunteered for the Alaska Mission Committee Native Ministry for fifteen years.

Governor's Committee on Employment and Rehabilitation of People with Disabilities

Teri Buckmeier-Burke of Anchorage was appointed to an employer seat. Buckmeier-Burke currently works for Chugach Electric Association, Inc. as a recruitment/human resource specialist, and has taken courses in human resource management from Alaska Pacific University.

Mayfield Evans of Anchorage serves in the employer seat for the committee. He currently works as the president of E & S Diversified Services. Evans served in the U.S. Air Force for 27 years and has attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

Boating Safety Council

Melinda Hofstad of Petersburg was appointed to a public seat. Hofstad was previously an information officer with the Petersburg Legislative Information Office and was chief of staff to former Juneau Representative Bill Hudson.

Mental Health Board

Suzanne Demos Price of Fairbanks was appointed to a provider seat. Price received bachelors' degrees in psychology and anthropology, and a Master's in psychology from California State University, Chico. She currently works for the Fairbanks Community Mental Health Center as the executive director.
