Voters Say Yes to Forming North Tongass Fire & EMS Service Area

Ketchikan: Voters who turned out at the polls overwhelming said yes to forming a North Tongass Fire and EMS Service Area according to the unofficial results of Tuesday's special election. There were 396 yes votes reported to 49 no votes. Voting in the special election was limited to those residents of the proposed new service area.

At 9:00 am Wednesday , March 12th, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Canvass Board will meet to open and tally the 11 questioned & 30 absentee ballots and prepare a Grand Tally of the March 11, 2003, special election results. The public is invited to attend.

The unofficial results released Tuesday evening reported that of the 2,302 registered voters in the proposed new service area the voter turnout at the polls was 445 - or a voter turnout of 21%.

With the approval of the new service area, a board of directors will be appointed by the Borough Mayor subject to confirmation by the Borough Assembly. It has been previously announced that this board may be appointed right after the election is certified by the Assembly.

 

Update:

The Canvass Board met at 9:00 am Wednesday morning. The unofficial Grand Tally of the March 11, 2003, special election results after counting 11 questioned ballots & 30 absentee ballots is 428 yes votes to 51 no votes.

The unofficial results released Wednesday morning reported the same figures of 2,302 registered voters in the proposed new service area with a voter turnout at the polls of 445 - or a voter turnout of 21%.
