Juneau - Governor Frank H. Murkowski on Monday announced the appointment of William (Bill) Tandeske of Eagle River to be the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. Tandeske brings 26 years of public service as an Alaska State Trooper serving the citizens of Alaska to the position.

"As a long time state trooper, Bill Tandeske brings a depth of knowledge and experience to his new job as commissioner of public safety," Murkowski said. "It is vitally important, in light of our new concerns about homeland security and the threat of terrorist acts, that the change of leadership at public safety be as smooth as possible. I have also charged the department to concentrate on its basic mission of the vigorous pursuit of crime."

Tandeske joined DPS in 1973 and retired as Major (Deputy Director) of the State Troopers in 1999. Following his retirement from the Department of Public Safety, Tandeske served as Security Director for Ahtna AGA Security Inc., providing security services to Alyeska Pipeline and clients in the Anchorage area and also for Doyon University Services managing security services for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Tandeske, 49, came to Alaska in 1957 and was raised in Bettles, Cordova, and Delta Junction, where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of Alaska where he earned an AA in Justice and is a 1990 graduate of the FBI National Academy. Tandeske and his wife, Debbie, have five children and three grandchildren.

The Department of Public Safety is Alaska's primary law enforcement agency and serves to prevent loss of life and property as a result of illegal or unsafe acts. Including the Alaska State Troopers, Fish & Wildlife Protection Division and the State Fire Marshal office, the department enforces criminal laws, traffic laws, and state fish and game regulations, and provides public protection programs for fire and traffic safety.

The department has 758 employees and an annual operating budget of more than $107 million. Tandeske will assume his new duties as commissioner and Alaska's Top Cop immediately.
