Murkowski Applauds President For Making Tough Choices

Juneau - Governor Frank H. Murkowski tonight said that President George W. Bush's State of the Union address recognized the challenges facing the nation, while acknowledging tough choices that must be made to keep the Union strong.

"I was pleased that President Bush acknowledged the many challenges we face as a nation and a people in this uncertain time. The President's words will steady us as the world hovers on the brink of war," Murkowski said.

"I share in the President's belief that the United States must get more of its energy domestically from places like Alaska. These domestic sources of energy are not subject to the political whims of dictators like Saddam Hussein and unstable kingdoms like Saudi Arabia," said Murkowski. "We can also play an important role in America's homeland security. By protecting the pipeline, we ensure that 1 million barrels of oil per day are available for domestic use."

"I look forward to working with the President to ensure the nation's energy security by opening ANWR to provide homegrown American energy from Alaska," Murkowski said. "Alaska is proud to stand up and be counted to do its part for the nation."
